It is an extremely relaxing and empowering experience. During a healing hypnotic state, it is you who is in control. You are the driver and you cannot be made to do anything you do not want to do. You still stick to your moral and ethical compass just as you would if you were wide awake.

In hypnosis, you will experience a trance-like state in which your mind and physical body can relax but you can also experience heightened focus and concentration. Trance is actually very natural for us (especially for kids) and we often experience this in momentary situations when we are in between the conscious and unconscious state (not fully awake and not fully asleep. The breath tends to slow down and muscles relax and let go so you feel a pleasant and almost euphoric state.

Hypnotic states are completely natural and you will enter a hypnotic state at various points throughout the day. For example when you are watching tv, just about to fall asleep, just about to wake up and even when we are driving. Have you ever driven somewhere and been unaware of how you got there? You entered a hypnotic state and your subconscious mind guided and protected you, getting you to where you needed to be safely. And the same can be said for hypnosis!

It is important to know that there is no such thing as a “hypnotised feeling.” There is no specific feeling that is associated with hypnosis. However, there are feelings that can be recognised as belonging to the state of hypnosis, such as a warm flush feeling, a heaviness in the body or even a lightweight floaty sensation.

Quite often, it will feel like you have been in hypnosis for only about 5 minutes or so, when it has actually been closer to 20 minutes. Sometimes, it will work in a reverse manner and you might believe 2 hours or so has passed, when in fact, it has only been about 20 minutes.

Please appreciate that everyone has his or her own unique experience of hypnosis, so what one person feels may be entirely different to the next.

Many people would not necessarily recognise many of the sensations they experience in hypnosis unless they were pointed out to them because they feel so normal. If you feel something completely different, that is perfectly okay. You are unique and therefore your physiological and psychological experience of hypnosis will be unique.

Are you more relaxed while seated/laying down?

Can you eliminate any noise? (Make sure lovely pets and family members are aware that you are not to be disturbed for an hour or so)

Do you need to gather up some blankets and pillows or maybe have an eye cover available? Wear something comfortable. Think of what will induce the most relaxing experience for you.

I always recommend having a blanket to cover up if you get cold during a session.

Make sure technology does not get in the way- check your connection, have headphones on if needed and make sure we can hear one another (the visual is not as important but does help).

If the session is in person, the same rules apply!

During your initial free telephone consultation, we will have a conversation about what you want to achieve from hypnotherapy. Once your goals have been clarified, I will learn more about you and your situation by asking you questions about things that may be impacting your symptoms such as sleeping patterns, medical symptoms, medication or treatments involving other healthcare providers and your lifestyle.

All of your sessions will be tailored to you specifically. I don’t work from generic scripts as everyone is so different.

At all stages, you are part of the process. I’m not ‘doing it to you’ – rather I am working ‘with’ you to help you help yourself.

This is a common worry—and it’s almost always unfounded. Hypnosis is a natural state that everyone experiences. Some people go deeper than others, but depth isn’t the goal—responsiveness is. As long as you’re willing and open, hypnotherapy can work for you.
