Dealing with the Rising Challenge of Obesity and Our Beloved NHS

Obesity is a real concern that’s hitting close to home in the United Kingdom. As our waistlines expand, its no surprise the pressure on our NHS grows too. It’s clear that more and more people are seeking solutions for weight loss, and some are even considering gastric band surgery abroad as a quick fix. But I’d like to talk about something different… Hi, I’m a Clinical Hypnotherapist originally from the northwest, and for the last 19 years lived in the northeast of England, and I truly believe that hypnotherapy offers a unique, natural, and lasting solution for managing weight issues, all without adding extra strain on our beloved NHS.

Let’s look at some numbers. According to data from NHS Digital, in 2021, about 28% of adults in England were considered obese. That’s a huge leap from just over 15% back in 1993. It’s alarming how quickly this problem has grown over the years.

Not only is obesity a health concern, but it’s also a financial burden on our NHS. The Obesity Health Alliance estimated that the NHS in England spent around £6.1 billion in 2017/18 on treating obesity-related conditions like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

The Surge in Medical Tourism:

As the NHS grapples with the increasing demand for obesity-related treatments, we’ve seen a rise in medical tourism for weight loss procedures. Between 2014 and 2019, there was a staggering 50% increase in the number of UK residents travelling abroad for gastric band surgery, according to figures from the British Obesity Surgery Patients Association (BOSPA). This not only strains the NHS further but also raises concerns about the quality and safety of care abroad. The significant increase in numbers of patients travelling abroad for both aesthetic and bariatric (weight loss) surgery has been linked with consequent serious complications and even deaths.

People are seeking speedy solutions, that tempting “quick fix!” And this has driven more individuals towards medical tourism, looking for affordable gastric band surgery overseas. While the promise of fast results might sound tempting, it comes with risks and potential complications. It’s crucial to explore safer, more sustainable alternatives that don’t compromise health or burden our already stretched NHS.

BAAPS and BOMSS recognise that surgery in the independent sector in the UK is more expensive than in some other countries. The principle reason is that healthcare in England is tightly regulated by the CQC, in Scotland by the HIS and in Wales by HIW. This ensures quality, standards, and ultimately safety are as good as possible. Not all countries have the equivalent to CQC regulation, and not all countries’ standards are at the high level of those in the UK.

The specific concerns about people travelling overseas for surgery include:

1. Lack of adequate expert pre-operative assessment, discussion and counselling

2. Poor choice of procedure offered and the number of combined procedures offered in one surgical sitting

3. Different procedures being performed to the one the patient expected, or the details of the procedure conducted being unknown

4. Unknown quality and safety of the team providing surgery

5. Risks of long-distance travel immediately following surgery, for example developing a blood clot in the leg or lung (which can be potentially life-threatening)

6. Poor or non-existent access to routine post-operative follow up care, increasing the possibility of outcomes such as weight regain and nutritional deficiencies in bariatric patients and increasing the risks of sub-optimal outcomes and complications in plastic surgery patients.

7. No direct access to expert care if a complication occurs (and most GPs are not trained in the care of patients who have had bariatric or plastic surgery)

Having surgery abroad is certainly less expensive than in the UK, but standards of healthcare regulation overseas often differ from the UK, which means the quality of surgical care can vary significantly. In the event of a problem, clinical and legal redress is much more difficult leaving people exposed and unprotected.

Therefore, I strongly urge caution to anyone considering surgical tourism – what cost is your health?

The Affordability of Hypnotherapy:

One important thing to consider is the cost-effectiveness of hypnotherapy. A study published in the “International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis” found that, on average, hypnotherapy for weight loss costs significantly less than surgical options. The exact numbers may vary, but this study underscores that hypnotherapy can potentially save both individuals and the healthcare system a substantial amount of money.

To put this in perspective, if a significant number of people seeking weight loss treatments were to opt for hypnotherapy instead of surgery or medical tourism, it could relieve a substantial portion of the NHS’s burden related to obesity. This, in turn, would free up resources for other essential healthcare services and reduce the stress on our healthcare system.

The NHS is facing a major challenge dealing with the consequences of obesity, including diabetes, heart disease, and musculoskeletal problems. In recent years, more patients have turned to gastric band surgery abroad due to long waiting lists and a lack of accessible alternatives. This has put a significant strain on NHS resources and raised questions about the sustainability of our healthcare system.

In the northwest and northeast of England, where my hypnotherapy practice operates, adopting hypnotherapy as a primary weight management strategy could make a big difference. By using these numbers and statistics, we can better illustrate the potential benefits of hypnotherapy in addressing the obesity crisis, easing the pressure on the NHS, and enhancing individual health and well-being long term.

Hypnotherapy: Empowering Your Mind for Weight Management:

Hypnotherapy offers an effective and holistic approach to weight management that deserves attention. Instead of resorting to invasive surgeries with dangerous side effects or extreme diets, hypnotherapy focuses on rewiring the subconscious mind to develop healthier habits and attitudes towards food, exercise, and self-image. Through relaxation techniques and guided imagery, hypnotherapy can uncover the root causes of overeating or emotional eating, leading to lasting results.

Evidence of Hypnotherapy’s Effectiveness:

Recent studies have highlighted the positive impact of hypnotherapy on weight management. According to a meta-analysis published in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis (2018), individuals who underwent hypnotherapy for weight loss achieved significantly greater weight reduction compared to those who didn’t. What’s even more impressive is that participants maintained their weight loss over an extended period, proving the effectiveness and sustainability of hypnotherapy as a weight management tool.

Why Hypnotherapy Beats Gastric Band Surgery:

Gastric band surgery may promise quick weight loss, but it’s not without risks and complications. In contrast, hypnotherapy offers several advantages:

  1. Non-invasive: Hypnotherapy doesn’t involve surgery, minimizing physical risks and complications.
  2. No Downtime: Unlike surgery, hypnotherapy doesn’t require recovery time, allowing you to get back to your daily routine right away.
  3. Tackling Root Causes: Hypnotherapy digs into the psychological aspects of weight gain, addressing emotional triggers and building healthier coping mechanisms. Not taking one addiction away to be filled with an alternative addiction.
  4. Sustainable Results: Hypnotherapy promotes lasting behavior changes, encouraging a healthier lifestyle that continues beyond the sessions.

Supporting Solutions:

As a hypnotherapist my goal is to provide accessible and effective weight management solutions for people in our community. By choosing hypnotherapy, individuals not only invest in their well-being but also help relieve the strain on the NHS, ensuring that medical resources can be better directed to critical healthcare needs.

Weight management is a pressing issue in the UK, and we must explore sustainable solutions that reduce the burden on the NHS while promoting individual well-being. Hypnotherapy offers a safe, effective, and empowering approach to weight management, addressing the root causes and fostering lasting lifestyle changes. By choosing hypnotherapy, we can work together towards a healthier society and a stronger NHS, all while embracing natural and sustainable alternatives to medical tourism.
